Leaf spring shackles????
« on: June 03, 2013, 01:29:51 AM »
My driverside literally sits 1/16" off of the frame and the passenger is fully touching the frame at ride height, and driving they constantly hit the frame with suspension movement. They squeak on the frame which is the most annoying part. Is there a remedy for this that will not cost alot? I have contemplated making my own shackles, if so what thickness would be ideal, I believe I have some 5/16" on hand would that be thick enough? For now I have stuffed a few small strips of rubber between, but its only a matter of time until they wear through that.

Can you take a picture of how they sit and where they rub?  I might be able to find something in one of my catalogs that could help

Sorry for the crappy pics, this is the passenger side, kind of hard to get good angles.

What leaves are you running?  Looks to be more of a problem of the leaves being too long for the mounting points than a shackle issue.

belltech leafs, they did drop the truck more than 3" after settling though. Its more like 4" drop. They are a few years old and I used them on my 93 as well, but did not have this issue.

Have you compared shackles with another S10?  Maybe they aren't stock.

I also haven't heard much about belltech leaves other than "soft".  Your experience lines up with the several people I have talked to who have had them on various S trucks.  I hadn't heard about the shackle issue before, though.  I've avoided the Belltech 3" leaves, but I'm also running blocks, which aren't that great of a choice either if I want to avoid wheel hop.

This truck was bone stock when I got it. I was going to notch them some, but the metal is already thin enough and rusty, I do not want to sacrifice the strength. I think 5/16 and good welding should be plenty stronger than stock while giving me the clearance I need.

That area on the shackle is designed to keep the leaf eye from slamming into the frame. If you're currently lower than you'd like or need, you could just switch to some longer shackles. Circle track guys make them all the time, and often even use shackles with multiple holes to adjust for different tracks.

yep, leafs are too long/too compressed. I've seen it before but not bad enough to touch the frame.

Ride height is perfect, I might make them 3/4" or so longer, I do not 3/4" is going to be too noticeable.

Are you sure the springs are installed the right way with the shorter end towards the front of the truck?   I know with my belltechs they had one of the leafs mislabeled.

Sounds like they are just wore out though.
