project: stepasyd (not much to see now...)
« on: September 19, 2009, 03:36:52 PM »

so yea..i had a thread going on, on the old forum, although i don't have too much to show off, really...my truck is a 98 regular cab..2.2, 5 speed...stepasyd is just a play on words, since it is a stepside, and "step aside" since i'll be able to squeeze 8 letters into a custom license plate in NC...which i have yet to do, but plan on doing so eventually, once the truck is worthy of the title.

yes, it's still stock height, I still have to use it as a truck, on occasion, although i have a 3/3 sitting up...i still have to haul things around, on dirtroads, helping my dad. one day, i'll bite the bullet, and go ahead and put the drop on, although i eventually plan to put coilovers on all 4 corners, once all is said and done. oh well, i'll let the pics do the talking, i suppose..some mods are self explanatory, others are a little more subtle..

seriously old pic, but it is one of my favorites...

i later went on to install billet in the grille, valance, and cut the goodmark ram air hood, and welded mounts, in order to fit billet behind the opening for the ram air (although it isn't functional)...damn sure looks alot better than a plastic insert..

^^thinking about tinting the foglights, but not sure if i should...open to suggestions...^^^

also one of my other favorite mods is the stamped chevrolet emblem in the tailgate..i robbed this from a mid 80's fullsize tailgate, and welded it in.

the interior has a few of my favorite touches, also...i've attemped to convert everything inside to either charcoal, or parts have been smoothed, and primed black. the dash is really the only part left, that is the original color of the interior. has some pieces covered in charcoal gray suede, including the back panel, below the backglass, the upper door panels, and the shift boot. the doors have polk db6501 components in them, along with the acrylic barbwire armrests, you may have seen them before, they were in a truckin' mag feature truck, 3 or 4 years ago. i fell in love with them the day i saw them in the magazine, and just knew i'd have to figure out how to make my own, well a local ended up buying the truck, and parting out some things on it to give the truck it's own personality, when he rebuilt it, so i jumped at the opportunity to get them...i have since gone on to accent them with backlit white LED's...

thats probably one of the more recent pics, from a meet in march..minus the box of shirts in the passenger seat. ::)

i also removed the cig lighter, from the ashtray, and i put the toggle for my foglights in the hole where that was located, the LED's in the armrest also have a switch hidden under the dash.

i picked up the hurst indy shifter at a local swap meet, i love the looks of the hurst, but with the actual hurst shifters, for the NV1500, i wasn't really a fan. so i got a nut, and welded it onto the base of this shifter, and it just simply spins onto the factory stud, that the stock shifter threads onto, love the way the shifts feel, almost identical to the hurst that was in my dad's '57 belair, which was my main motivation for going that route with the shifter...cavalier seats, out of a 2000 model...i have a set of matching polk db401's (4") mounted high up in the b-pillars, just above the seatbelts, don't really have any pictures of them, though...off the top of my head, other than this one, when i was working on them.

under the hood, not much is going on..not a fan of beefing up the 2.2..so there is just a cheapo ebay intake, and a thrush turbo muffler...only other plan is to eventually do an e-fan swap..that pretty much concludes everything, other than the mods you see everyone else doing..ss mirrors, clear corners, blah blah blah...i recently got rid of the tinted tails, after catching flack from the local troopers..currently running a set of candied euros, although i'm currently trying to make the move back to stock, just looking for someone to trade with.

eventually plan on a v6 turbo...maybe a camaro 3800? if not a 4.3...5 or 6 speed? basically a mean stance, slick 2 tone charcoal gray over black paintjob, 18 x 8's in the front, and 10's out back, have had my heart set on the gray spoke torq thrusts, although i've been recently drawn towards the boss 338's..could eventually go with any kind of simple gray spoked, big lip style wheel. and get the interior clean and finished up...and other minor touches...

wow, i guess i kinda just went all over, with my ideas and thoughts on here, just tried to cover all my bases in one post, i'm sure i'll come back later, and add something else, as i remember it.  :D anyways..glad to be back on the site  ;D

Good start to your project.  I just picked up a Hurst shift lever at a swap meet yesterday for $5.  I plan on doing something similar to yours.  I can't justify the $$ for the complete setup.

You said you were planning on running coilovers in the rear one day.  Are you planning to 3-link. 4-link or something like that?  I'm planning on building a 3-link for my Blazer eventually.

Later, Doug

yea, i'd probably go with a 4-link, haven't really worked out all the specifics towards that end of the plans....and sad thing is this project has been ongoing to this point, since 2002..but like i said, it's been my daily all this time, and i do have to use it as a truck on occasion, so i've just held off on alot of mods, the truck really won't get torn into, as far as most of the major mods i have for it are concerned, until it gets replaced with another daily.
