Bullet Proof Leaf Spring Suspension?
« on: December 11, 2011, 05:26:00 PM »
What would be the best rear leaf suspension setup for my 94 ex cab? I have taken all of the front suspension from my 93 rcsb and put it on the 94. It has ub uppers, truck upper bj's and power performance tall lowers, drop spindles, and zq8 springs with half a coil cut off.

I have belltech 3", zq8, and z85 leafs, all laying around to choose from. I also have 1,2,and 3" blocks to choose from. I have a zq8 rear bar, and zq8 bilstein shocks. Right now I am running the zq8 leafs with a 2" block, but I cant take advantage of the front suspension because the rear suspension. When everything was in the 93, it had the belltechs and a 1" block and the rear wasnt holding me back nearly as much. It got better after the 2" block was installed but still not near as good as the 93 was. Ride quality really isnt a concern, It doesnt bother me to feel everything.

What exactly is your truck doing now that you dislike?
Also just to clarify you are looking for handling over everything else?

Basically if I hit the slightest dip or bump in a curve the rear of the truck wants to jump sideways. Thats the biggest issue. It was alot worse before the block was installed, but was never a problem with the belltechs in the 93. It doesnt feel like it wants to hold the road as well either. The only suspension difference between the 2 trucks are the leafs and blocks. I am using the same wheels with the same size tire, but stickier than what was on the 93, also using the same shocks and rear bar.

I have read many people say that the zq8 leafs were better than the zq8 leafs, so I tried them, but want a more knowledgeable answer before I swap to the belltechs. I have to swap rear ends soon so the backend will be coming apart anyway,

And yes handling above anything else.

If you had the belltechs and a one in block and liked it, then I would try it again. What's the worst that can happen?

It sounds like you just want to loosen up the rear end a little more. As artos said the belltech would probably be the best choice of the 3 as I believe it's the softest. ZQ8's are pretty soft leaf springs though. I currently have a set with 2" blocks and on a good bump will hit the bump stops hard.

I have belltech leafs with a leaf removed on my blazer, way too soft. It axle wraps REALLY bad, and bottoms out on the frame with more than one person in the truck. No rear bar. I've never had traction problems with the rear, only the front. Can tell the rear body rolls way more than the front though

It sounds like a shock issue to me. I have the Z85 5-leaf pack and blocks which is really stiff but it still doesn't jump around like you describe. I'd try a different set of shocks

^ that was my initial thought as well but he also said that it doesn't hold the road as well as it used, presumably on a smooth curve. I've got the exact rear shocks and have no problem with the rear end bouncing around on dips/bumps. It sounds like a combination of issues.

Its not the shocks, after riding in a mostly stock xtreme today, that has the same problem, im convinced its the leafs. The only upgrade done to it is adjustable shocks on all 4 corners. His truck does exactly what mine does.

I like the feel of my beltechs vs my old z83's with a 3" block.

with the beltechs leafs and sway bar, + my stiff kyb monomax's, the rear of my truck feels much better than the front of the truck.

idk what your wheel/tire setup is, but my 245/45r17 nittos feel great in the turns compared to my 245/50r16 hankooks.
