Correct springs for 1998 SS
« on: September 21, 2015, 03:37:35 PM »
So I've been searching the interwebs far and wide and I can't seem to find what I believe to be the correct part number for coil springs for a 1998 S10 SS.   Obviously it uses some sort of ZQ8 drop spring, but when I look up my particular year, I get listings for springs that fit the LS model which wouldn't be a lowered coil.  If there's not any difference in say a 2002 ZQ8 xtreme coil and my trucks coil then I'll just look them up for one of those.  BUT since it is an SS, I'd really like to make sure it's the proper factory spec'd spring for the truck.  Does anyone know if they used the same springs in all of the ZQ8 optioned trucks?

Thanks for the help everyone.

i think the 4cyl vs 6 cyl had different springs.
I'll try to remember to look it up tomorrow for you.
Otherwise I'm sure Harley could help too
my blazer is cooler than your s10

There's a lot of speculation about what springs were used in what trucks and if it depended on 4 or 6cyl, cab type, whether it had AC or not, etc. I haven't really found any 100% clear info because Moog usually lists a ton of applications for all of their springs. When I rebuilt my suspension over the winter on my 1997 SS, I went with Moog 5658 springs. They're listed for first gen appliations, but Hi_Im_Sean had a post on the s10forum and said they matched the specs off an 'early zq8' truck. When I put them in it actually sat about 3/8" higher than my original springs (which could have been sagged out). I later installed tall lower ball joints to put it just a touch lower than it was originally.

Supposedly later ZQ8 trucks had a 590lb spring vs 535lb. Moog 80996 is listed for 1999-2003 Xtreme trucks and is rated at 590. At first I ordered those and noticed they were pretty stiff. When I installed them in my truck it raised it almost 2", which was odd.

From the factory there are at least 2 rates for the ZQ8 suspension as JustAnSS points out.  My numbers show 525 and 590, but that is a negligible difference.  From what I know I'd say the GM part number for your truck is 15058958, but if you drop me your VIN I can verify the part number for your exact truck. I'd recommend that as it has been a few years since I put my list of springs together and never finished researching all the part numbers.

Thanks for the info everyone, I guess you're right 535-590 doesn't seem like much of a difference, but I had a similar issue with xtreme V6 coils that JustAnSS had with his.  I installed mine on my 93 rcsb and it lifted the truck more than 2 inches from where is was before and I also installed drop spindles at the same time.  They were so stiff it was like a lift spring!   I'm sending you a PM Harley with my VIN, hopefully you can tell me exactly what spring I need.  There's only about 3/4" between the control arm and the bumpstop, so these springs are either totally sagged out or someone cut them.

Which style bump stops does your truck have? It's normal for ZQ8 truck to be close to them because of the lowered height, and they have taller bump stops than standard height trucks. My 97 had the early style and actually rode on them at ride height. Even though they're softer than regular bump stops, it rode a little harsh sometimes.

I switched to the newer design ZQ8 stops and although it rides on them, it's much smoother.

Using your VIN 15058958 is indeed the right part number.  That's the 525 spring. Looks like they can be had for about $40-50 each around the internet if you dig far enough.

For the negligible difference I was comparing Moog's 535 to GM's 525. 525/535 to 590 will show a difference.  I apologize for wording that poorly..

Your pictures aren't showing up for me since I'm at work, but the one's on this truck looked similar to the stock one's on my 1993.  They weren't the white dome style like I thought all ZQ8's had.

Thanks for the confirmation on the part number Harley, it's strange to me that those springs fit so many different trucks, a lot that aren't even zq8.  GM's selection of parts is confusing.  haha

Just curious, did you ever end up going with those springs and installing them?
