The first one looks like an off the shelf fuel filter and the middle one is an in-line fuel pump I believe.

Yep.  Looks like a pre pump filter (not a bad idea), inline pump, and then the flex fuel like you said.

Are you thinking of a fuel cell for the 5.3?  I'm not quite sold on my installation.  Considering going back to a stock tank since it at least has a sump that holds fuel in reserve unless I can find a good price on a cell with built in sump/trap doors/etc.

I'd agree, looks like pre-pump filter, pump and main filter. Usually on aftermarket fuel systems the pump makers reccomend using a 10 micron filter pre-pump and a 100 micron post pump. If you are using a stock tank with the socked pick-up then the pre-pump filter is un-necessary, but on fuel cells they are VERY necessary as any, and I do mean ANY sediment in the tank  is going to get sucked right back and into the pump if you don't have one.

Something is amiss, look at what we thought was the second filter again, it actually looks to be fed by another line, some kind of regulated or by-pass filter? Or a filter on the return?

It is the flex-fuel/corvette filter with a built in regulator for a returnless fuel line setup.  Quite a nifty part when you need it.

I'll have to look it up, sounds nice, but it would seem easily surpassed if it wasn't adjustable or rebuildable. And you could always put your regulator at the rear, and some do, most put it in the engine bay for ease of access for adjustments and so they don't have to buy Y's.
